A superb antique 19th century French sterling silver dressing table top vanity mirror. Such exquisite neoclassical decoration to the sterling frame. Patterned with Louis XV style ribbon and reed borders with foliage accents. Further decorated with a border of laurel leaves. Resting atop a pair of scrolled pedestal feet with foliage accents. Topped by an impressive ornamental finial casted of thick silver and beautifully detailed with openwork. In the form of a large medallion cartouche (blank / no monogram), festooned with flowers and ribbon bow. Mounted onto a thick, solid wooden backing with folding easel. Original sliding mechanism is intact and in good working order. Measures an impressive 20 1/2" x 13 3/4". Hallmarked with the French Minerve 1st standard mark, which depicts the goddess Minerva with a number 1 beside her to denote a silver content of 950/1000 (of 95% pure silver and a higher finesse than .925 sterling). Bears a maker's mark, possibly that of silversmith Victor Lang, active in 1882, whose workshop was located at 11 rue Bailly in Paris. A fine French sterling tabletop mirror such as this is difficult to come by, and one in such fine condition is rarer still. We've been lucky to have had two others in our RL shop in the past, and this mirror is by far one of the largest and most decorative we've seen. In very good condition for age and type with general wear. The original thick glass mirror is intact. Trimmed with a wide beveled edge. In good shape for its 100+ years with no chips or cracks. Provides a clear reflection after all these years, no cloudiness or severe silver loss. There is some spotting and yellowish areas to the glass mirror, but this only adds to the charm of this old mirror and does not detract from its beauty. Perfect on a vanity table surrounded by a collection perfume bottles and sterling brushes.
