Outstanding rare antique 19th century Victorian era Black Forest hand carved wood cigar caddy. Entirely from wood, featuring a serpentine shaped box framed with gadrooned edge and wonderful carved details. Unique to this piece is the large oval porcelain plaque mounted on the lid, framed by a wood bark surround and carved details throughout. Hand painted with fine details and beaituflly rendered, with a miniature portrait featuring a tranquil and charming pastoral view. Depicting a couple fishing by a lake, the scene includes trees and foliage, with a boat sailing by and majestic mountains and clouds in the distance. The front of the cigar box is carved with a cluster of cigars tied with ribbon bow, finely detailed and dimensional. The sides with thick carved handles, of stylized scrolling foliate on a textured ground. Resting on four elaborate feet. Retains a working lock and original key. Opening to reveal a removable tray, also richly carved to resemble intertwined woody vines. The tray is capable of holding 48 cigars, with about 5/8 to 11/16 diameter opening slots. Will easily hold cigarillos and cigars with a cepo of up to 40 gauge with about a 5 1/4" maximum length (or for cigarillos between a 3 1/8" to 3 1/4" minimum length to ensure they fit above the tray and are still easily accessible). Overall in very good antique condition with general wear commensurate with use. There is a small lack to the ribbon motif surrounding the key hole at the front, visible in the pictures. There is an old repair to the bottom of the base, concealing an age split and part of the bottom of one foot, all shown in the pictures.
