The word “caddy” derives from the Malay Chinese “kati” which means a measure of tea weighing about a pound and one third. English usage of the term was not widespread until the end of the 18th century, and when introduced probably referred to the box or chest which housed porcelain or metal bottles. When tea was first introduced in England, it was taken only in small quantities for medicinal purposes. Yet this single imported commodity was destined to inspire almost two centuries of social ritual and decorative arts. The largest and most diverse group of caddies are the wooden boxes or chests. The high cost of tea assured its status as a luxury item and necessitated a secure container for its storage and display. "The lady of the house kept the key and ceremoniously spooned the tea leaves to the mixing bowl or infusion pot using a caddy spoon." "The construction and decoration of these containers was a reflection of the social rank of the owner. Impressive large size and outstanding quality. The box is circular in form, hand painted throughout with idyllic, pastoral scenes. Adorning the lid is a charming portrait of a shepherdess mother and her children tending to the flock, one child holding a little lamb, as they walk down a path followed by a goat or ram and surrounded by an elegant country setting. A border of pink roses on lush foliage encircles the sides of the box. The base is also beautifully enameled with a serene Barbizon style pastoral view of a country house near a lake. A lovely treasure! The box is signed L. Coblentz, for the enamelist Levy Coblentz. The style of the scenes in this piece are very similar to the works we typically see on Austrian Viennese enamels, in particular finely detailed figures and pops of color against a pale blue sky background. The art of kiln-fired enamel is a painstaking process. Such exquisite detail and color, as evident in this lovely box, require a very skilled hand and knowledge acquired through years of practice. The enamel is first applied in brushstrokes of powders in muted tones, which is then kiln-fired and harden to a finish similar to glazed porcelain. Finished with gilt mounts. Born in Venice, Sormani trained as a cabinetmaker. In the mid 1800's, he moved to Paris and opened his first shop in 1847. He specialized in making fine “meubles de luxe”, (deluxe furniture) in the style of Louis XV and Louis XVI. Paul Sormani rose to prominence through the patronage of Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon III. His work was described in the 1867 Exposition Universelle catalogue as “toute sa production revele une qualite d’execution de tout premier ordre”. Sormani exhibited in Paris in 1849, 1855, 1862, 1867, 1878 and 1900, and in London in 1862, winning numerous medals. Amongst the items Sormani exhibited at the 1900 Exposition Universelle were a Louis XV style bureau and a Louis XVI style commode both based on originals held in the Jones Collection at the South Kensington Museum. It can be difficult to date Sormani's work, as the firm was in production for nearly ninety years. However, when Paul Sormani died in 1877, his wife and son took over the business and from this date onwards pieces are normally signed 'Veuve Sormani & Fils'.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/2444/7807/products/antiqueFrenchpaulsormaniParisgameboxmarquetryboxgametokensgamingpokerplayingchips91.jpg?v=1667594453
antique-french-cut-crystal-glass-box-casket-gilt-bronze-mounts
Antique French Cut Crystal Glass Box, Casket, Gilt Bronze Mounts

Antique 19th century French cut crystal box. The Pontarlier pattern is a top quality cut crystal production identified in the Baccarat 1916 catalogue. The box is framed by elegant bronze mounts, featuring a rosette escutcheon on the front, two loop-ring side handles, and a base resting on four ball feet. The hinged lid opens to reveal a removable caddy tray housing 6 matching bottles fitted with conical shaped hinged lids opening to original glass stoppers and having polished pontil bases. All six perfume bottles are completely empty of fragrance and contain no perfume or other liquid. They are being sold solely as antique collectible glass bottles. The stoppers are numbered to correspond to matching numbers on the bottle bases, indicating they are original. Remarkably, 5 of the 6 bottles still retain their original early Baccarat paper labels (which often times got lost, removed or washed away). From 1860, Baccarat began marking their pieces with a paper label and it wasn't until 1936 that the cristallerie introduced their permanent acid-etched logo.
