He studied at the Sèvres school of ceramics and then joined his father Émile at Desvres in 1905, taking over operation in 1930. The artist was trained at Sevres in Art Nouveau Japoniste techniques in ‘grès flamme' (stoneware with variegated flame-like glazes) which influenced Desvres to produce ceramics outside of the firm's usual production. Production was extremely varied and ranged from lamps and utility items to advertising, trophies and tiles. Fourmaintreaux collaborated with Fernand Léger, painter and potter who worked in Biot in the South of France. The association encouraged Fourmaintreaux to work in primary colours - reds, white, yellows on a black or white ground. Applied clusters of individual blossoms were painstakingly hand made and further applied with vines and leaves. Superb examples of chrysanthemums, roses, poppies, carnations, dahlias and more. Each expertly hand painted in delicate brush-strokes and a wealth of intricate detail, done in vibrant and bold colors. At the front and back are two reserves representing a different floral spray exquisitely hand painted in KPM quality. Seated on the shoulder are two full length and fully dimensional figures of maidens. Beautifully modeled, one woman holds a helmet while the other plays the harp, perhaps an allegory of war and peace or muses of the fine arts (music and theatre or literature perhaps). The lid is a charming confection, depicting two playful cherubs or putti flanking an asymmetrical cartouche with crown finial, also beautifully hand painted with a floral bouquet. The lid with reticulated pierce work and further adorned with colorful applied flowers. The urn terminates to a pedestal base, richly decorated in applied flowers and hand painted floral reserves. The uncle of Paul, Nicolas Ambroise Milet, left his village in Normandy, well-known for its ceramics production since the medieval times, to join the Sèvres Factory in 1852. Highly gifted, he was then made director of the furnaces at Sevres. He called to Sèvres his youngest brother, Felix-Optat Milet. Optat began his career as a modeler for Sèvres in 1862. Despite the fact he was employed by the Sèvres factory, Optat opened his own workshop in 1866 at 6 rue Troyon, near Manufacture Nationale in Sèvres, where he employed up to fifty workers.
