Outstanding antique 4 piece French sterling silver mounted cut crystal tumble-up, bedside carafe service, or «service de nuit verre d'eau». Stylish and functional, these hard to find "bonne nuit" tumble-up sets are ideal for serving up a nighttime refreshment and lovely to display on a nightstand or dresser in the master or guest bedroom. Comprising of a carafe, 'upside down' drinking glass tumbler (timbale), circular tray and stoppered flask insert for a 'jigger' of flavor additives or liqueur, all hallmarked for .950 silver. Of quality cut crystal patterned with gorgeous engraved intaglios comprising of floral garland swags and Louis XVI style ribbon and reed borders. The sterling silver mounts feature gold vermeil finish embellished with borders of criss-crossed ribbon and foliage done in raised relief. The rare glass insert with stopper is usually missing from these old sets, ideal for adding a touch of flavored extract or alcohol for a nightcap. Each piece is hallmarked with the French Minerve 1st standard mark, which depicts the goddess Minerva with a number 1 beside her indicating a silver content of .950/1000 silver (95% pure silver and a higher grade than .925 sterling). Maker's marks of initials J.B., likely for Jean Blanche, active in 1876, whose workshop was located at 44 rue Amelot in Paris.. The set is in overall good antique condition with general wear to the gold vermeil finish commensurate with age and use. No chips or cracks to the glass. A couple of small shallow dents on the silver base of the cup. Stands 6 3/4" total height when stacked. The carafe decanter alone is 6 1/4" height x 3" width. The glass tumbler is 3" height , with a 2 3/8" diameter opening. Tray or underplate is 5 1/2" diameter x 1" height.
