Fabulous antique 19th century Black Forest hand carved wood figural cigar or tobacco jar humidor table box. Carved from solid wood to resemble a tree trunk surrounded by foliage, with carved wells for holding matches, resting a pipe or store small objects. Supplementary carved texture to the wood surface gives the look of knotty old bark. The hinged lid opens to reveal a deep compartment inside. To the front is a charming and fully dimensional ‘animalier’ study of two chamois figures. Beautifully rendered, one being the adult and the other is the kid. Both figures are finished with a pair of glass eyes, which adds to the wonderful sense of realism. The natural posture of the figures and fine details throughout the piece reveal the work of a master carver. The lid is almost hidden among the intricate details, and the piece is so well carved that a guest would hardly know that it opens. With its impressive size and beauty of the sculptural figures, it could easily stand alone as a fine decorative object to incorporate into your home or office decor. In overall good antique condition with general wear commensurate with age and use, some age-related cracks to the wood at the base, there appears to be some old repairs here or there hidden among the piece, but no lacks
