
Gorgeous antique French gilt bronze powder box or dresser jar. Circa 1890s-1910s. Decorated with pink enamel over guilloche surrounding a central hand painted gouache miniature portrait housed under glass and signed lower right Vely. The box is beautifully decorated in neoclassical style ornamentation. The lid features appliqués of scrolling foliate and flowers on a textured ground, bordered on the edge with an ornate frieze. Further decorated with reticulated tracery of flowers and stylized leaves. Opens to reveal a beveled mirror and removeable cut glass liner embellished at the base by a 24-point cut starburst. Marked FRANCE on the base. In overall good antique condition with general wear commensurate with age and use. Some silver loss to the edges of the mirror. Mirror still retains good reflection. The enamel and glass are in good condition with no chips or cracks. There is a lack to the end of a leaf applique adorning the lid. Measures 3 3/4" diameter 2 7/8" height.
