A gorgeous Art Deco sterling silver chain mail mesh purse by Theodor Fahrner. A charming piece, the thick framework encases fine chain mail mesh, the kiss-lock closure opening to reveal a lined interior of leather divided compartments. Enhanced with silver dangle tassels embellished with lapis beads. Suspended with a superb linked chain. Hallmarked for 935 silver. Marked for the jeweler Theodor Fahrner (1859 – 1919). Fahrner was trained as a steel engraver, and was one of the pioneers of designer jewelry. He had freelance artists (designers) with ideas prepared by him working for him. He managed to turn the largely insignificant ring factory of his father in to one of the most creative jewelry companies in Europe. The workshops were based in Pforzheim in the Black Forrest in Germany. Measures 13" total length with chain; the purse itself measures 3 1/4" across x 4 7/8" from the kiss-lock closure to the bottom of the tassels. Weighs 117.3 grams. In good vintage condition, a couple of small nicks to the lapis beads commensurate with use and age.
