Antique mid-19th century French porcelain cup and saucer by Jacob Petit. Hand painted with an array of vibrant flowers and gilt trim. Marked on the underside with initials J.P. in blue underglaze. Jacob Mardochee dit Petit (1796-1865) trained as a painter in Paris, travelled to Italy, Switzerland, Germany and England where he lived and worked as a theatre set designer. After a short stint at Sevres he purchased the Baruch Weil porcelain factory in Belleville in 1830 and in 1834 at the factory in Fontainebleau where he made Rococo-style porcelain noted for its originality and vivid colors. In overall good antique condition, no chips or cracks, some light wear to the gilding and to one flower on the saucer as shown. The cup measures 4 1/2" wide including the handle, 3 3/4" diameter, stands 1 7/8" height. Saucer measures 5 5/8" diameter.
