Superb antique 19th century French 18k yellow gold brooch set with Baroque pearls framing an exquisite hand painted enamel on copper miniature portrait depicting a family, 'a scène de famille'. Featuring a scene after Jean Honoré Fragonard's painting La bonne mère (The Good Mother). The scene depicts a mother and her children. She sits at the center with her daughter at her side and a baby sleeping in a cradle. Content to nestle against her shoulder is an adorable white cat. A servant pours water into a nearby basin. All set within a lovely garden scenery. A beautifully executed and finely detailed enamel portrait. The enamel portrait is backed by a mother of pearl panel. Set within a hand crafted 18k yellow gold mount, embellished by a scalloped and engraved decorative border. Having 38 baroque pearls in prong settings around the perimeter. Features a C-shaped clasp with a hinged gold pin. The brooch weights 20.80 grams. Hallmarked with the French control mark indicating 18k gold content, in the form of an eagle's head, in use in France from 1838. In good to excellent condition for age and type with no damage to note. Measures 2 1/8" x 1 7/8"
