The exquisite enamelwork on this 19th century French jewelry box is breathtaking, surrounded by a pastoral setting, the scene depicts children with cherubic features at play, and a family together fishing and enjoying the day in the country. Dating to the early 19th century, if not earlier, this antique box is quite large, measuring . The oval shaped box features a slightly domed hinged lid and entire circumference adorned in colorful enamel work, encased in bronze with ebonize painted finish and gilded trimming and resting on four feet. Hand painted in stunning detail and vivid colors, with playful whimsical scenes amid pastoral backdrops that comprise of various colorful foliate and trees, blue skies that include flying birds in the distance! Has a working lock and key, the key is not original to the piece but works well. The lid opens to reveal a tufted lined interior. The piece is signed Oliviere Boult de la Madeleine, whose shop was located on the grand Paris boulevard de la Madeline, located near the Madeleine Church (Église de la Madeleine), and famous for its many exquisite shops, home to some notable manufactures and boutiques of the 19th century including clockmakers L.Leroy & Cie and the bronze foundry of Susse Frères.
