Equestrian animal study portrait of a horse by Wilhelm Westerop (German, 1876–1954) based in Potsdam. Beautifully rendered with exquisite detail to the body structure of the horse. Oil on Canvas. Framed. Titled 'Peter'. Signed lower left 'Wilhelm Westerop' and dated 1928. Westerop was known for his portraits of animals, particularly thoroughbreds, racing horses and dogs. Given his high level of proficiency, it's likely that he was regularly commissioned to paint beloved family pets and thoroughbreds. Frame measures 23 5/8" x 19 3/4". Canvas measures 18" x 13 7/8". Some paint loss along the bottom edges near the frame. A repair at the top near the upper right partially hidden by the tree foliage, some areas of inpainting near the legs. Frame having some typical lacks/scuffing.
