Set of 12 antique French sterling silver 8" luncheon knives. A gorgeous and complete set of twelve. Blades are steel, each marked Paris. The silver handles feature a Gordian knot pattern. Hallmarked at the ferrules with the French Minerve 1st standard mark, which depicts the goddess Minerva with a number 1 beside her to denote a silver content of 950/1000 (of 95% pure silver and a higher finesse than .925 sterling). The maker's marks are mostly obscured by the decoration or not complete enough to be legible, but appear to be that of silversmith Emile Barteling, whose symbol was a lyre, active 1894-1896 at 76 rue de Turenne, Paris. In good to fair condition. Blades are original and of old steel (pre-stainless steel), having patina/darkening from age and scratches from use. The hollow-handles with some typical scuffing and dimpling, one or two dents, a few of the handles having areas of exposed pitch as seen in the pictures. Housed in an old presentation, the exterior showing its age as shown. Knives measure 8" length. Weigh 416.9 grams. Box measures 9" x 8 1/2".
