An exquisite antique French sterling silver custard cream dessert ladle. The bowl with one side decorated with a scalloped edge and the other slightly curved. Decorated with a sea shell scalloped motif centered by a finely detailed sunflower and embellished with leaves on vines. The handle decorated with C-scrolls and rocailles. 'Crème anglaise' or custard spoons always have one side of the bowl shaped and the other slightly curved. In the 1860's, custard was popular and was served as an entremet or dessert. Hallmarked with the French Minerve 1st standard hallmark, which depicts the head of the goddess Minerva with a number 1 beside her to designating a silver content of .950/1000 silver (95% pure silver and higher than the standard .925 for sterling silver). Bearing maker's mark for Parisian silversmiths Maillard frères & Vazou, active from 1897 to 1903 whose work shop was located at 113 rue de Turenne, Paris. In good condition with general wear. Measures 9 7/8" length x 2 3/4" diameter bowl. Weighs 106.2 grams.
