An exceptional antique French sterling silver set of 6 dinner knives richly decorated in Louis XVI styling. The pattern on this knife set is a version of the prestigious Louveciennes pattern by Odiot. Featuring elegant fluting and strapping, with acanthus accents and shell motifs. Engraved with a coat of arms identified as that of the Fould family. The Fould family were successful bankers and politicians. Below is the family motto 'Aide toi, Dieu t'aidera', a French proverb exclaimed by Joan of Arc during her incarceration in Rouen, which means: Help yourself, and God will help you. Furnished with steel blades. The blades are faintly stamped "Paris". The handles are marked with the French Minerva 1st standard hallmark indicating .950/1000 silver (95% pure silver and higher than .925 sterling). Bearing maker's marks for silversmith Edouard CORVASIER, (active in 1863 to 1880 at 12 rue des Filles Saint Thomas, Paris ). Corvasier was frequently commissioned by Odiot. Overall the set is in good antique condition with general wear and scratches commensurate with use and age. Measures 10 1/4" length. The box is not original to the set, but houses it well.
