Lovely antique hand carved solid wood sculpture of a flying cherub (also referred to as a putto). Most likely German (Bavarian) or Austrian dating to the 18th or 19th century, the sculpture exhibits classical European baroque stylistic influences. The piece is carved from a tight-grained hardwood, likely limewood, and features a warm patina. The cherub is depicted mid-flight, oriented horizontally with the body gracefully arched. Featuring soft, rounded, and naturalistic folds typical of classical putti figures, with plump cheeks to the face and detailed fingers and toes. The hair is carved to resemble curls. A pair of detailed wings are attached to the upper back, featuring carved layers of feathers. An antique iron ring loop is secured with screws into the center of the cherub's back, accompanied by an older hanging wire, indicating it was designed to be suspended from a ceiling or mounted prominently on a wall. Architectural elements like this were traditionally used as decorative hanging figures in churches, private chapels, or grand residential estates, designed to be viewed from multiple angles. Measures 17" length x 7 1/2" wide x 7 1/8" height. In overall good antique condition with general wear commensurate with age and use, the outreached hand with some repairs to the fingers.
