Antique Baroque devotional oil painting on copper panel depicting Saint Francis of Assisi cradling the crucifix in prayer. Dating back to the 17th century to early 18th century (circa 1650–1720). Likely Flemish or Spanish School. Portraying Saint Francis in a brown Franciscan habit in prayer and contemplation as he embraces the crucifix with a sorrowful expression. Red stigmata wounds are visibly painted on his hands. The style borrows heavily from the Baroque chiaroscuro approach with a nearly black background to dramatize the lit details of the saint's face and hands. Unsigned. The back of the copper sheet with typical dark oxidation as shown. Housed in an old, possibly late-period, ebonized wooden frame. In overall good antique condition for age and type, the frame with nicking and scuffing to the wood, the painting with possible touch-ups. Frame measures 5 1/4" x 4 3/4". Copper panel measures 4 1/8" x 3 1/4".
