An exquisite fully hallmarked Art Deco era French powder compact made from high grade 950 silver and 18k rose gold. Circa. 1920s to 1930s. The lid decorated with ribbed panels centered by rose gold overlay. Finely engraved with a scene of a squirrel on a tree branch, surrounded by leaves. Enhanced with six cabochon rubies. Such is the precision & quality of this vanity item that when closed the hinge is completely flush. The gold push button is decorated with channel-set rubies. Opening to reveal the original beveled glass mirror and powder well retaining the original powder sifter screen and little swan's down powder puff. On pressing the thumb catch, the lid glides open to reveal an excellent beveled glass mirror which gives a perfect reflection. The lid and inside of the powder well are hallmarked: Near the left corner of the mirror, is the hallmark of the conjoined boar and eagle head. From 1829, items made of both gold and silver were stamped with a conjoined boar’s and eagle’s head. The eagle's head hallmark signifies 18k gold. The inside of the powder well is a hallmark of a boar's head, signifying a silver content of .800/1000, and a silversmith's mark. In overall good vintage condition. Some scratches to the sides of the compact as shown from use. Measures 3" square x 3/8" deep (76mm x 76mm x 10mm)
