Stunning Art Nouveau French silver cigarette and vesta case set. Depicting a scene of the goddess Venus, the classic figure of a female nude wading in the billowing waves of the majestic sea. The expression on her face is exquisitely beautiful and her hair cascades down her back. She is flanked by putti or child like figures paying homage to both the sea and the basking goddess. One holds aloft a shell containing a large pearl, the other blows a conch shell. To the reverse is a flock of seagulls riding the waves of the tempestuous sea and gliding through the wispy breeze. Both pieces are signed at lower left for Lasserre. The highly collectible motif is expertly worked in stunning repousse and executed in fine detail. This masterpiece represents the collaborative work of the renowned medalist sculptor, Pierre Firmin Lasserre and the skilled Parisian silversmith Adolphe Frontin. Both pieces are hallmarked with the French head of the wild boar. In use from 1838, this mark was typically used on small objects of a least 80% pure silver content. In overall good antique to vintage condition for age and type, with general wear commensurate with use. There are some dents to the cigarette case, a dent or two to the match safe. Cigarette case measures 3 3/8″ x 2 5/8″. Vesta case measures 1 3/4″ x 1 3/8″. Total weight is 93 grams.
