Antique French Japonisme Aesthetic tooled Cordoba leather jewelry box. Of rectangular form with canted corners and serpentine front, back and sides. Painted with gold & red cinnabar lacquer highlights on patterns adapted from Japanese lacquer work. The intricate embossed design consists of folding fans layered atop each other. Each fan details symbolism represented in Japanese art with various imagery of birds, fish and flower blossoms; with motifs such as a crane, peacock, finch and a dancer in a kimono. The edges of the box finished with a tooled parcel gilt border. Centered by a gilt bronze or brass lock plate decorated with putti. Retains a working lock and key. Rests on four gilt brass feet. Opening to reveal a fitted two-tiered interior lined in brown moiré silk. The top tray with compartments for rings and other jewelry as well as a pocket watch display holder. The tray lifts out to reveal a deep compartment below. Box measures 10" x 7 5/8" x 3 7/8" height. In overall good antique condition with general wear commensurate with age and use. Some lacks to the leather as shown.
