
Large antique 19th century hand carved wood Corpus Christi crucifix, monastery, chapel or church altar piece. Striking and beautiful, exhibiting such superb quality craftsmanship. The corpus sculpture is realistically rendered with a defined musculature and detailed features, well defined hands and feet. Accompanied by the INRI plaque above. Each of the four points carved to resemble stylized leaves. The back of the cross is initialed F.S. Mounted on an exquisite base with intricate openwork crafted to resemble a multitude of vine branches, leaves and grape clusters. Resting on four feet resembling talons. An impressive piece, stands 29 7/8" height x 15 1/8" length x 7 1/4" width. The corpus measures 8 5/8" height x 7 1/4" across hand to hand. In overall good antique condition with general wear commensurate with age. One index finger missing from the hand, possible repairs hidden among the vines on the base.
