Antique French 18K Yellow Gold & Cultured Pearls Brooch with Enamel Miniature Portrait of Venus & Cupid, Love Token Amatory Jewelry
A rare and fine mid-19th century French 18k yellow gold mounted enamel on copper miniature portrait brooch / pendant. A fantastic example of the love token / amatory jewelry genre . Set against a blue sky, the enamel portrait depicts Venus or Aphrodite dressed in white and a vibrant shade of pink, her lovely face framed by a cascade of long flowing hair and crowned with a coronet of pink roses. Beside her is Cupid, or Euros, in full flight carrying a basket of roses overhead. Such exquisite imagery presented here, symbolic of love and devotion. Surrounded by gold framework and prong set with 33 cultured pearls of excellent quality. The intricate handcrafted gold mount to this piece is outstanding, a testament to the skill of the jeweler. Topped by an impressive finial, in the form of a pair of Cupid's famous arrows, the ends accented in white gold. Twined within a French ribbon knot bow, festooned with various Springtime flowers and leaves. The base features a bow, centered by a flower and flanked by leaves. Overall the effect is impressive, the work is of exceptional quality and the portrait is gorgeous. The portrait is backed by a mother of pearl panel. The gold mount has a C-shaped clasp with a gold pin on a pivoting hinge. Also features a movable bail allowing the piece to be worn as a pendant. Hallmarked with the French control mark indicating 18k gold content, in the form of an eagle's head, in use in France from 1838. Weighs 19.60 grams. In good to excellent condition for age and time with no damage to note. Measures 2 3/8" sans bail, or 2 15/16" with bail, x 2 1/2" at its widest.
