An extraordinary antique 19th century French bronze holy water font, stoup or bénitier. Centered by an exquisite Limoges kiln-fired enamel on copper plaque, portrait miniature, depicting Jesus Christ wearing the crown of thorns. The portrait is flanked by two angels in flight. Further decorated with scrolling foliage and topped by a small figure of an angel or cherub and cross. Below is a large opened coquille shell, decorated with Rococo style dolphins and foliage and various figures of cherubs in a cloud. Mounted onto a wooden plaque, the back with a folding easel for table top display or hole to attach a hook for hanging. Measures 13 5/8” height x 7 ½” wide x 3 ¾” deep. In overall good antique condition with general wear commensurate with age and use. Some patina/discoloration to the bronze mount. The enamel portrait is in good condition, there is a small flake chip located at the upper left edge. One bolt is missing from the back as shown.
