Antique French Enamel on Copper Gilt Bronze Ormolu Jewelry Casket Box
A fabulous antique French Napoleon III era ormolu jewelry casket mounted with five exquisite enamel on copper plaques. Each convex panel is masterfully hand painted, the enamel work is exceptional in both color and detail and showcases the skilled artistry of this painstaking art form of fire-kiln enamel. Adorned with finely painted enamels depicting various scenes of pastoral landscapes. The lid portrays a courting couple fishing by a lake and enjoying a day in the country with a chateau residing in the distance. Dressed in 18th century costumes, the subject matter is reminiscent of works by such rococo artists as Fragonard and Watteau. To the front is another vignette portraying a lady with a fan, set in repose she seems to partake of the romantic scene at a distance (a chaperon, perhaps?). Truly a stunning piece, the scenes are quite charming and colorful. All set within a gilt bronze framework, hinged lid and locking mechanism to the front. The box rests atop four ornate feet in the form of stylized scrolling foliate. The lid opens to reveal a plush mauve colored velvet lined interior. An impressive piece. In good antique condition with some general wear, lacking a key. Measures (including the feet) 8" in length x 4" wide x 3 1/4" tall.
