Antique French cut crystal inkwell with Empire style bronze or brass mounts. Of solid cut crystal, heavy and beautifully crafted. The base having an intricate cut pattern of diamond points and hobnails. Likely an early Baccarat, as the famed cristallerie only marked their wares with a paper label from 1860 on (which often times got lost or removed) and did not use their acid-etched mark until 1936. The inkwell has a hinged bronze lid embellished with neoclassical appliques. The decor includes a ribbon bow tied wreath and garland swags. A decorative border decorates the crystal body, the garland motif matching the lid. Opening to reveal a removable inner glass liner. Inkwell measures 3 1/2" height x 2 3/8" square. In overall good antique condition, some wear to the metal mounts commensurate with age and use. No chips or cracks to the heavy quality crystal inkwell, on the base is a flaw to one octagon hobnail and a flea-bite or two the high points of the cut. The removable glass liner does have rim chips.
