A fabulous antique French Napoleon III era gilt bronze jewelry casket or box mounted with five exquisite enamel on copper plaques. Each enameled panel is masterfully hand painted, using bright and vivid colorations and fine detail. The lid alone is a miniature masterpiece illustrating three small children, each of course with a very cherubic face. They appear to be playing with a ball, or perhaps a large egg! Either way, the children are beautifully portrayed, dressed in flowing Grecian style clothing and set in pastoral scenery surrounded by flowers and vines. Quite a charming piece! To the front of the box is an enamel on copper plaque depicting yet another small child-this one playing the lute. Further decorating the box are three panels, one on either side and a larger one to the back, each entailing a country setting. The lid opens to reveal a tufted silk-lined interior.
Measures 7 1/4" in length x 4 1/2" in width x 4 1/4" in height.
