Stunning antique French 19th century hand painted porcelain portrait plaque. This charming miniature portrait is expertly hand painted depicting a serene Madonna gazing lovingly at her sacred child Jesus. A fantastic ‘scène de famille’ portraying a mother and child as well as a religious icon image beautifully rendered here in fine detail and vibrant color. Surrounded by angels playing musical instruments, lulling the baby Jesus to a peaceful sleep. Signed J or L Denis. Dated 1899. With dedication in French "To my niece Anne". This scene is after an 1881 painting titled The Virgin with Angels (French: La Vierge aux anges), also known as The Song of the Angels by the French artist William-Adolphe Bouguereau. The plaque measures 10 1/4" x 7 3/4" (sight). In very good antique condition, no chips or cracks. Plaque presents beautifully in a gilt wood gesso frame. The frame with craquelure and lacks to the gesso. Frame measures 15" x 13 3/8" x 1 5/8" deep. The back of the frame with an old paper label for the framer, Thorel & Desvaux Pere & Fils located at quai de l'Archevêché in Lyon, their services included reglazing mirrors and suppliers of frames.
