Antique French Sevres Style Hand Painted Porcelain Urn, Bronze Satyr Handles
Antique French hand painted porcelain lidded urn vase with gilt bronze mounts, attributed to Sevres. The main body features a lovely dandelion yellow or «jaune jonquille» ground. To the front is a stunning hand painted Rococo scene depicting a courting couple in a pastoral setting. Of superb quality, done in minute brushstrokes of bright and vivid colors. Set to the reverse is a colorful vignette of various flowers on a white ground. Signed A. Daret. The scenes are framed by gold gilt patterned friezes and scrolling foliate. A hand painted floral garland encircles the lid, featuring flowers of a variety of hues and types surrounded by gilt painted trim and tracery. Topped by a bronze finial in the form of a stylized artichoke. The lid opens to reveal a metal interior surrounded by bronze gardrooned edge rim. Flanked by a pair of figural handles, in the form of opposing grinning Satyr or Pan with ram's horns outspread and curled. Finally, the piece rests atop a pedestal base decorated with neoclassical motifs and stylized foliage. Marked under the lid with a blue Sevres interlaced L's, letter B within and letter S below. In very good antique condition with no chips or cracks, no signs of repair, there is some general wear to the bronze mounts commensurate with age. Measures 15 3/4" height x 9 1/4" width.
