Ornate French sterling silver footed compote centerpiece or tazza. This footed serving dish or tray boasts an opulent Louis XVI/Rococo motif done in superb quality repousse. Sumptuously decorated with heavy scrolling foliage and rocailles, embellished with flowers and fluting. Finished with a serpentine rim patterned with petite blossoms, scrolling foliate and rocailles done in raised relief. Raised on a circular pedestal base, also richly decorated. Beautifully crafted from the highest quality silver. Hallmarked with the French Minerva 1st standard mark, in use from 1838, which guaranteed the finest quality silver of .950/1000 purity (95% pure silver and a higher grade than the standard .925 for sterling). Assay office numeral located on the Minerva mark indicating the city of Lyon. Maker's mark for silversmiths Charles-Frédéric Berger & Nesme Henri, active in Lyon from 1889 to 1924 at 25 montée du Chemin-Neuf and subsequently 122 rue Saint-Georges (1900). In very good condition with general surface wear from use. Measures 9 3/8" diameter x 4 7/8" height. Weighs 591.5 grams.
