A fine Victorian era gold swivel brooch. Featuring a gouche hand painted miniature portrait of a young girl in red. En verso is a hair art memento skillfully shaped to form feather plumes, ornamented with gold wire and four miniature seed pearls, on a white ground likely milk glass or white chalcedony. The portrait and hair art are housed protectively under glass. Inscribed on the sides are the names Frederick, Alfred, Florence, Eva. Interestingly, examining the hair art closely, there appears to be 4 locks of hair in slightly different shades, perhaps representing the 4 names inscribed on the side of the brooch and corresponding with the four tiny pearls in the work. Further inscribed on the opposite side with initials E.G.M.C. and dated April 10, 1859. Perhaps a mother's brooch commemorating her children or a mourning memento. The portrait and hair art revolves around a vertical pin, enabling the front or reverse to be worn facing forward. Mounted in an ornate twisted rope frame, unmarked but tests at 10K to 12K yellow gold. The back with C shaped clasp and T-pin, pendant bail on top to allow wearing on a chain. Measures 2 1/2" x 2 1/4" x about 5/8" deep. In overall good to fair antique condition. The portrait and hair art appear good for age and type, the mount shows wear and damage, with some dents, splits and holes within the ropework, and there is a notch in the gold frame surrounding the portrait near the engraved children's names.
