Antique French silver wine taster sommelier cup, tastevin. Inset at the base with an 1827 Kingdom of Sardinia, Charles Félix 1 lira coin. The obverse of the coin can be seen from the bottom of the tastevin surrounded by elongated "godrons" designed to create reflections in the wine to better judge its color and clarity. The exterior of the bowl decorated with grapes. Coiled snake handle is a nod to Dionysus, the God of Wine. Hallmarked with the French Minerve 2nd standard mark for .800/1000 purity silver in use since 1838. Bearing maker's marks for silversmith Adolphe Briand, active 1907 at 26 rue de La-Tour-d'Auvergne. Measures 4" length x 3" width x 1" height. Weighs 76.6g. In overall good antique condition with general wear commensurate with use and age. The sides of the bowl with shallow indentions.
