LARGE Antique 19c French Limoges Enamel on Copper Grisaille Portrait Plaque, Framed
An antique 19th century French Limoges enamel on copper plaque. Stunning in its impressive size and outstanding craftsmanship, the plaque features a lady framed by arabesque motifs and heavy Rococo scrollwork. In grisaille with spectacular contrasting lights and darks to create impressive detail, depth and dimension. Accented in gold gilt highlights. Depicting a maiden exquisitely draped in robes. In her delicately painted hands is a half formed wreath, her boot resting atop palm fronds on a base of piled rocks. Perhaps an allegorical representation or Victoria/Victory. Signed simply with the enamellist’s initial A. in gold gilt. Housed within a hand crafted frame, possibly later, with brass loop for hanging display. In very good antique condition with no damage to the enamel to note, some wear to those gilt painted highlights a expected with age. Measures 17 5/8" x 8 1/2" width.
