Large German Porcelain Urn Von Schierholz | Hand Painted Applied Flowers, Cherub/Putti & Maiden Figures
Large German porcelain covered urn by Von Schierholz. Richly decorated in applied flowers and hand painted detail. Decorating the urn is an ample bouquet of various flowers in full glory. So finely rendered as to appear natural, it almost seems possible to smell their fragrance. Applied clusters of individual blossoms were painstakingly hand made and further applied with vines and leaves. Superb examples of chrysanthemums, roses, poppies, carnations, dahlias and more. Each expertly hand painted in delicate brush-strokes and a wealth of intricate detail, done in vibrant and bold colors. At the front and back are two reserves representing a different floral spray exquisitely hand painted in KPM quality. Seated on the shoulder are two full length and fully dimensional figures of maidens. Beautifully modeled, one woman holds a helmet while the other plays the harp, perhaps an allegory of war and peace or muses of the fine arts (music and theatre or literature perhaps). The lid is a charming confection, depicting two playful cherubs or putti flanking an asymmetrical cartouche with crown finial, also beautifully hand painted with a floral bouquet. The lid with reticulated pierce work and further adorned with colorful applied flowers. The urn terminates to a pedestal base, richly decorated in applied flowers and hand painted floral reserves. Embellished with gilt painted accents and trim throughout. A beautiful example. In overall very good condition for age and type. One maiden with a small chip to a foot. One cherub has a chip to the very tip of his pinky finger. There may be the occasional minor chip to a flower petal or two, which is to be expected for this type of piece though hardly noticeable as the floral arrangements are intricate and the overall piece is very busy. Marked to the base with the Von Schierholz crowned shield with three oak leaves in blue underglaze. Circa 1907-1930's. Stands 19 7/8" tall x 9 1/2" wide.
This is one of two urns available, please see my other listings for the matching urn.
Von Schierholz porcelain dates from around 1817. Since its inception, rather than focus on dinnerware, the Von Scheirholz factory has produced some of the greatest examples of porcelain vases, compotes, and figural items yet in the storied history of Meissen, Dresden, and other producers in Germany. In the early 1900’s Von Schierholz exported its finest decorative pieces worldwide, including to New York City. Von Schierholz is also known for their highly collectible character beer steins. The Von Schierholz porcelain factory is still located in its original town of Plaue in Thuringia.
