An antique French miniature portrait painting of a beautiful hound dog. Skillfully executed, imposing and stately with a forest background. Wearing a thick collar with red ruffled trim. A favored pet. We studied old prints and images of popular dogs from the late 1800s to early 1900s, and compared characteristics. Judging by her stance, muzzle, tail and cropped ears can only conclude that she is a type of boarhound and early breed of Great Dane. Meticulously hand painted and housed under glass within a Napoleon III era ebonized wooden frame. Unsigned. In good condition with general wear commensurate with age. Scuffing and nicks to the wooden frame accumulated over the years. Missing a loop ring for hanging at the back and there is an area of damage to the bottom side of the frame visible in the last picture. The portrait is in very good condition, beautiful. Frame measures 6 5/8" x 5 1/2"
