Signed Ruef Brothers Swiss Black Forest Hand Carved Bear Solid Wood Lantern Lamp

Rare antique early 20th century hand carved Black Forest figural lamp in the form of a traveling bear holding a lantern. The detailed figure shows a bear, standing on its hind legs. In his paws, he holds a walking stick for his voyage and a lantern for lighting the way. The lantern is suspended from his paw, the metal frame painted black and encasing four textured glass panels. The figure is of solid carved wood, exquisitely detailed and expertly worked with cross-hatching to resemble fur, lovely detailed paws and head. A wide open mouth set in a grin greets onlookers. Painted a vibrant red, with tongue exposed and white teeth bared. Finished with a pair of glass eyes, adding to the beauty and whimsical charm of this unique bear. The piece is signed by the artist/carver on the walking staff. Rare to find a signed Black Forest piece. Signed Ruef. The Ruef Brothers were famous carvers of large bears and owls in Brienz, Switzerland and mentioned in "Swiss Carvings The Art of the Black Forest 1820 - 1940" by Jay Arenski. Stands 13 1/4" tall x 10" width. Has glass eyes, painted white teeth and red mouth. Shows a nice dark brown finish and patina. In overall good condition with no damaged to this lovely wooden bear. The lamp is electrified for Europe and requires professional rewiring for use in the US.
