Victorian novelty sterling silver mounted scent bottle by Sampson Mordan & Co. The tapered clear glass body with silver lid with threaded collar and cork lined silver screw top lid. The lid is finely modeled as an owl's head. Beautifully crafted with fine detail, the owl further embellished with inset glass eyes. The craftsmanship is fine and detailed, typical of Sampson Mordans unique work. Lovely detail to the tiny feathers, ear tufts, around the eyes are all skillfully and carefully rendered. Inset with small amber and black glass eyes. In overall good antique condition with general wear. There is a dent to the top of the owl's head as shown. Some scratches to the glass bottle. Measures 2 1/8" length. Hallmarked for London, date letter U for 1895, and stamped "SM&CO" for Sampson Mordan & Company. There is a hallmark on the back of the owl's ear tuft. This mark is a French import mark called the Weevil, for items with a minimum of .800 silver content. Silver items from French treaty countries were struck with the weevil in a rectangle mark, used 1893-1984.
